Are you frustrated by your performance on the golf course? Have emotions been getting the better of you? Have you developed bad habits that are now hard to break? Even worse, are you missing simple putts?

Whether you’re just starting out or have years of experience, hypnosis for golf addresses the mental aspect of the game, helping you get back in the zone and back under par.

As sports psychology is used increasingly by top pros, it makes sense to bring the right attitude to every shot you play. From teeing off to putting – and all the shots in between – the right mindset can make all the difference to your scorecard. Especially when things go wrong!

On this page I’ll cover all the ways hypnosis can help you develop ‘zen-like’ focus that will help lower your handicap and – if you’re a pro – feel super confident about your next tournament.

Let’s get going…

Hypnosis for golf – developing a zen-like mindset

Over the last 20+ years I’ve helped a number of golfers – both pro and amateur – to improve their game through the use of hypnosis. Indeed, many professionals in all sports now often employ psychologists (who will use hypnotic techniques) to help them develop focus, concentration and a positive mental attitude.

Much of what I teach fuses hypnotic techniques with zen-like mindfulness, helping you to get into a ‘flow-state’ – even if things go awry. (In fact, especially if things go awry!)

As you’ll know from a bad shot, emotions can get the better of you. A bad shot early on can ruin the whole front nine – and even the back nine as well! You reach the 19th, slump down in a chair feeling thoroughly miserable and dejected. All because of that one bad shot early on.

But here’s the thing…

It wasn’t the shot itself that ruined the round for you – but your emotional response to it.

Hypnosis for golf is about mastering your mindset so that a single bad shot doesn’t result in a disastrous 18 holes.

Clarifying why you play golf: why are you on the course anyway?

Before we explore the ways that you can develop a zen-like attitude let’s look at why you play golf in the first place. What’s in it for you?

  • Are you super competitive and need an outlet to compete with others?
  • Is golf just a bit of fun with your friends – a hobby and a social get-together?
  • Or do you take it more seriously and play tournament golf? Are you a professional?
  • Is it a means of being out in the fresh air for a few hours exercise?
  • Perhaps you’ve taken up golf for a bit of fun in your retirement years?
  • Maybe playing golf gives you a sense of status and boosts your self-esteem (or can do when you play well)

These questions will help you identify why you play golf – your reasons and motivations. For most people (unless you’re a full time pro) golf is a hobby that should be enjoyed. However, if you become too competitive – or lost in your emotions – you forget this. Your emotions take over and you lose sight of the reasons why you’re playing in the first place.

What better thing to do than to play a round on a beautiful summer’s evening?

Reconnecting with the reasons why you play is vital, especially if your emotional brain tries to take over. It will calm your mind and help you see things from a bigger perspective. And a calmer mind leads to better performance.

What are you focusing on when you tee off?

So let’s get to the first hypnotic technique to help with your performance: laser-like focus…

When I work with golfers, one of the first questions I put to them is, “What are you focusing on when you tee off?”

Typical replies are…

“I don’t want to land in that bunker.”

“I’m making sure I steer well clear of the water.”

“I hope my swing is as good as it was on the driving range earlier.”

“There are people watching…I hope I don’t make a fool of myself.”

These are all bad mental habits that we all too easily develop if we keep repeating them. The thing is that one of the rules of the mind is that we try to create whatever our minds are most focused on. Focusing on the things you want to avoid means you’re more likely to land your ball there! And focusing on a bad habit – perhaps gripping too tightly on your putter because of tension – keeps you focused on the bad habit.

With hypnosis for golf, through the power of imagination and concentration, you program your instincts to focus on where you want that ball to go and how to develop better habits. In other words, you give your brain-body clear guidance on what you want, not what you don’t want.

What to do when you hit a bad shot (and you will!)

Bad shots happen to everyone, even top professionals. But to stop these bad shots ruining your whole round, hypnosis for golf will help you respond differently when you hit the rough or steer your shot into the trees or a bunker.

See, what most amateurs do after a bad shot (and even some pros) is to play a ‘heroic’ shot next time. Driven by anger and frustration, you try to make up for the error. Big mistake! Most heroic shots prove to be disastrous. You might get lucky, but nine times out of ten you’ll be in an even worse position, leading to yet more frustration. It’s a slippery slope into a very deep and dark hole!

After you’ve hit a bad shot, attitude is everything. Instead of beating yourself up, telling yourself how useless you are and how, “you’ll never be any good at this”, you need a mixture of compassion and curiosity. Be supportive of yourself; no golfer is perfect and even the best mess it up badly at times.

Take a look at these pros…

With curiosity, you can ask yourself, “I wonder what went wrong there?” Maybe you were a little tight with your grip? Perhaps you were experimenting with your swing? (Experimenting with anything is best left on the practice rounds). Perhaps you simply chose the wrong club?

No matter the reason, see the bad shot as a learning opportunity. Take a moment to register what likely caused the ball to go astray. Learn from it (perhaps make a note on your scorecard) and mentally move on. Of course, this is easier to do if your emotional brain stays out of the picture.

Zen golf: developing a beginner’s mind

The key thing is to stop that one bad shot influencing your whole round. With a different (and calmer) mindset you’re able to take any learnings from that one shot and let it go. Let go of any frustration, anger, embarrassment or even humiliation. Yes, it can feel like that when you’ve missed a foot-long putt.

The thing is this…

Speaking from a ‘zen perspective’, there is no ’round of golf’ but a series of holes, all involving a series of shots. And you play one shot at a time.

Zen golf means playing one shot – and only one shot – at a time. It’s not like chess when you’re planning 4 moves ahead. You’re not thinking of the next shot. You’re not thinking about your opponents (or friends you’re playing with). And you’re definitely not thinking about ‘getting a great score and lowering my handicap’.

In Zen Buddhism, the idea behind ‘beginner’s mind‘ is to approach each thing as if for the first time. Sure, you’ve probably hit thousands of golf balls but each shot on the course is unique. There will never be the exact set of circumstances for each shot, even on the first tee at your local club.

You choose the club, you get into the right mindset, you take your stance and focus. Then instinct takes over. And when you can let your subconscious/instinctive mind play for you (rather than against you) your golf will improve and become far more enjoyable.
